Why Gipsy Hill Clients Choose Us

The Floor That Proved a Point

The before-and-after alongside is a beech floor we transformed in Gipsy Hill: washed-out and tired on the left, rich even brown on the right. Beech is the timber most sanding firms refuse to stain because it blotches in unpractised hands. This one didn't.

  • Colour work is our thing: stains, raw looks, whites and near-blacks, always proven with a free patch test on your own boards first
  • Victorian terraces on steep streets, tight hallways, families living in the house throughout: standard week for us
  • Dust extraction on every machine, so the sanding stays in the machines and out of your rooms
  • New floors supplied and fitted too, when restoration isn't the right answer
  • Family-run, with 22 years' hands-on experience, same hands on every job

What We Do Here

Our Services in Gipsy Hill

Sanding & Restoration on the Hill

The terraces between Gipsy Hill station and Norwood Park are full of original boards waiting under carpet. We bring them back with a three-stage sand, repairs done with reclaimed timber of the same vintage, and a finish tested on the floor before it's committed to. The house stays liveable throughout.

Staining & Colour Changes

Going darker, going paler, or evening out a floor that's aged patchily: colour is where we've made our name locally. Twelve LOBA shades from bleached white to near-black, chosen on your boards, not from a brochure. The full story is on our floor staining page.

Beech, Maple & the Awkward Ones

Dense, tight-grained timbers that most firms will only clear-coat. They need finer preparation, different products and more patience, and they're the jobs we quietly enjoy most. Exhibit A is the beech transformation above, done right here in Gipsy Hill.

New Floors, Supplied & Fitted

Sometimes the honest advice is that the old floor has given all it has. When that's the verdict, we supply and fit the replacement ourselves: engineered oak, herringbone or chevron through our trade suppliers, one quote for the wood and the work, samples brought up the hill to your door.

Repairs & Gap Filling

Split boards replaced with reclaimed pine so the repair vanishes into the floor, and gaps filled with flexible filler that moves with the seasons instead of cracking out like hard resin does. We've written up both: reclaimed board repairs and flexible filler vs resin.

Every Quote Includes

  • Free site visit, fixed written quote in 48 hours

  • Daily clean-down: your home stays liveable
  • Aftercare guidance for years of good looks

Straight Answers

Frequently Asked in Gipsy Hill

Our floor is dark and dated, can you take it lighter?
Usually, yes. Old dark stains and finishes sand off with the top layer of timber, revealing the natural colour underneath, and from there you can stay natural or go paler still with a white or raw-effect finish. Depth of the old stain and the species of wood decide how far we can go, and that's exactly what the free site visit is for.
Is beech really that difficult to stain?
It has a reputation for a reason. Beech is so dense and tight-grained that stain struggles to absorb evenly, which is why many firms will only offer it a clear finish. The before-and-after on this page is a beech floor we sanded and stained right here in Gipsy Hill: even colour, edge to edge. Preparation is everything, and we prepare properly.
How do we choose the colour?
Never from a chart. Once the floor is sanded, we tape off patches of your shortlisted shades side by side on your own boards, in your own light, and you point at the winner before any final coats go on. It's free, and it's the only way to know what you're getting.
Do you fit new floors as well as restore old ones?
Yes. Supply and installation is a growing part of our work: engineered oak planks, herringbone and chevron, sourced through our trade suppliers with samples brought to your door, and quoted as one job covering the wood and the fitting. If a floor is past saving, replacing it well beats forcing another sand out of it.
What's parking and access like for you on the hill?
We manage fine. The kit comes to the door whatever the street's like, we sort permits where they're needed, and the machines all run through dust extraction so the house stays clean however far we're carrying. Steep streets and tight Victorian hallways are nothing new to us.
Are you Checkatrade approved?
Yes, and the reviews are public, both on Checkatrade and on Google. Same name on every job: Howard Naish Wooden Floors Ltd.
