Why Putney Clients Choose Us

One Firm for the Whole Floor

This riverside Putney apartment came to us through an interior designer who was having a nightmare finding a single company that could do everything her client needed: fit brand-new floors in the bedrooms, level anything that needed levelling, and re-sand all the existing floors, as one job. The quotes she had been given were, in her own words, ridiculous, and she was starting to worry she could not get it done inside her client's budget.

We quoted for the lot, fast and in full, and got her booked in. She could not believe how easy we were to work with, how quickly the quotes came over, and how much we knew about sourcing and matching boards. It is a big part of what we do: carrying the whole floor package from start to finish, so nobody has to project-manage three different trades against each other.

  • New floors, subfloor levelling and re-sanding all handled by one team, on one quote
  • Boards matched to the rest of the home exactly: same thickness, same grade, same everything
  • Continuous runs with no wooden thresholds, so the floor flows through every room
  • Brass inlays and bespoke detailing, added as part of the job or afterwards
  • Family-run, with 22 years' hands-on experience, same hands on every job

Putney is a floor-fitter's part of London. The big riverside developments off the Embankment and around Putney Wharf are full of open-plan apartments where a designer wants one continuous timber floor flowing from the kitchen through to the bedrooms, and the older streets up towards Putney Heath, the Dover House estate and the West Hill borders hold plenty of period homes with original boards worth bringing back. A lot of these blocks come with basement parking and a long haul up to the flat with the machines. Some firms are put off by that. We are not, and we turn up whatever the access is like.

What We Do Here

Our Services in Putney

New Floors, Supplied & Fitted

Engineered oak, herringbone and chevron sourced through our trade suppliers and fitted room by room. On the Putney job we laid five brand-new bedroom floors and matched the boards to the rest of the home exactly, so a designer's continuous, threshold-free look carries through. See our installation and supply page.

Subfloor Levelling

A new floor is only as good as what's underneath it. Where a subfloor is out of level or uneven, we sort it as part of the same job, so the finished floor sits flat and flush and the run stays true from room to room. One firm, one quote, no pointing between trades.

Sanding & Restoration

Existing floors that have gone dark and dull brought back with our three-stage sand, like the main living space and hallway on this job, taken from tired brown back to a light, natural oak. A finish is always tested on your own floor first. Explore our floor sanding page.

Board Matching

The detail that makes new work disappear into old. We track down boards that match your existing floor on thickness, grade and character, so bedrooms, extensions and made-good areas look like they were always there. It is one of the main reasons designers and homeowners bring us the trickier jobs.

Brass Inlays & Detailing

Brass inlays across doorways, bespoke borders and feature strips, cut in cleanly and finished flush. We'll do it as part of the original floor or come back and add it later, as we did here when the client decided afterwards they wanted brass between the rooms. Cutting into a finished floor is no problem for us.

Every Quote Includes

  • Free site visit, fixed written quote, no obligation
  • Industrial dust extraction on all machines
  • Full public liability insurance
  • Dust sheets, skirting masking, door seals
  • Daily clean-down: your home stays liveable
  • Aftercare guidance for years of good looks

★★★★★

"We had our ugly laminate flooring ripped out and the hardwood floorboards underneath restored to their original splendor. Dean was able to carefully match the finish to that in our existing rooms, making the whole flat come together."

Frequently Asked in Putney

Can one firm fit new floors, level the subfloor and sand the old floors in Putney?
Yes, and that is exactly why we get called into Putney. The apartment on this page came to us through an interior designer who could not find one company to do the lot: five new bedroom floors fitted, subfloors levelled where they needed it, and all the existing floors re-sanded, in one package with one quote. Most firms want to do only their bit, so you end up managing a fitter, a sander and a leveller between you. We take the whole floor from start to finish.
Can you match new boards to the existing floor so it flows through with no thresholds?
Yes. On the Putney job the client did not want any wooden thresholds, the floor had to flow through every room. We sourced boards for the bedrooms that matched the rest of the home exactly, same thickness, same grade, same everything, then laid them so the run carries on unbroken from room to room. Board matching is one of the things designers and homeowners come to us for, because a mismatched threshold strip is the giveaway that two different trades did two different floors.
Can you add brass inlays between rooms after the floor is finished?
Yes. On this job the client decided after we had finished that they wanted brass inlays across the doorways to break the rooms up. That is no problem for us, we went back, cut out neatly across each doorway and inlaid the brass into the finished floor. We are happy to add detailing like brass or bespoke borders either as part of the original job or afterwards, and a lot of firms shy away from cutting into a floor that is already down.
Do you work with interior designers on Putney projects?
Often. Designers use us because we quote fast and in full, we know how to source and match boards, and we can carry the whole floor package rather than just one part of it. On this project the designer told us the other quotes she had been given were, in her words, ridiculous, and she was worried about hitting her client's budget. We priced the entire job clearly and got her booked in, and she was surprised how straightforward the whole thing was.
Is riverside and basement parking a problem for you in Putney?
No. The Putney riverside developments and apartment blocks often mean basement parking and a long haul up to the flat with the machines, and we know some firms are put off by that. We are not. We carry the kit in whatever the access is like, sort permits or bay suspensions where they are needed, and every machine runs through dust extraction so a lived-in or newly finished apartment stays clean.
Are you insured and Checkatrade approved?
Yes to both. We carry full public liability insurance, and our reviews are public on Checkatrade and on Google. Same name on every job in Putney and across South London: Howard Naish Wooden Floors Ltd.
