Balham isn't just where the business is based. Luke was born and raised here and has spent pretty much his whole life in SW12, so when we sand a floor in Balham, there's every chance it's a street he's known since he was a kid. That's not a marketing line; it's why the van is usually parked here.

The Lagler Flip on the edges. The last few inches by the skirting get the same care as the middle of the room.

Where It All Started

The First Floor We Ever Sanded Was in Balham

Howard Naish began in 2021 in a front room in SW12, with thirty-odd years of other people's floors already between us. No clients, a website, a van, and a stack of flyers we walked through Balham's letterboxes street by street. The first call came from a family just opposite Hyde Farm: one small pine bedroom that turned out to need everything we knew. An old concrete hearth had to come out, new joists went in across the void, and boards that earlier trades had left floating on fresh air were lifted and re-fixed so every one sat solid. Then a full three-stage sand, the stain the family chose, and three coats of lacquer.

The phone hasn't really stopped since. Hundreds of floors later, the van still parks in the same postcode, and every SW12 job is still measured against that first little bedroom. The full write-up of that first job is on the blog.

What We Do Here

Our Services in Balham

Pine Floor Restoration

Original Victorian and Edwardian pine boards sanded, gap-filled and finished. The most common job in SW12. If you've got carpet, the boards are almost certainly still there underneath. Common across Hyde Farm Estate, Heaver Estate and the streets around Balham, from Bedford Hill through to Nightingale Lane.

Hardwood Floor Sanding

Oak, walnut, ash and reclaimed boards sanded back to bare wood and refinished. Three-grit progression, edge work tight to the skirting, and your choice of LOBA finish: oil, hardwax or lacquer.

New Hardwood Installation

Engineered or solid oak supplied and fitted. Engineered is the right call for first-floor flats and mansion blocks like Du Cane Court. It handles central heating cycles without movement. Sourced from Natural Wood Floor Co, Flooring Sales and Staki, premium suppliers, not the thin engineered boards you find on the high street.

Bespoke Pattern Installation

Herringbone, chevron, basket weave, mansion weave. Properly templated, properly fitted. Increasingly the favourite in Balham's recently-renovated reception rooms and mansion-block kitchens. The pattern most often badly laid by general contractors. Worth getting right first time.

Whitewashed, Limed & Coloured Finishes

LOBA's full colour range applied to your existing or new floor: Scandinavian whites, soft greys, deep walnuts, limed oak. Sample patches done on-site before you commit.

Straight Answers

Frequently Asked in Balham

My boards have been carpeted for decades, can they really be saved?
Almost always yes. The original pine boards in Balham's Victorian and Edwardian terraces are sturdy timber, and decades under carpet usually means they're protected from the worst wear. Gaps, splits, the odd water mark and the occasional missing board are part of the job. None of that is a problem. We'll tell you straight at the quote stage if anything is genuinely beyond saving.
I'm in a Du Cane Court or mansion-block flat, does engineered or solid wood work better?
Mansion blocks with central heating need engineered. Solid wood reacts to the heating cycles in a flat and you get movement, gapping and creaking down the line. A quality engineered board still has a 4 to 6mm wear layer (plenty for future sanding) and behaves the way you want in a steady-temperature home. For ground floors with no underfloor heating, we'll discuss both.
How dusty is the work, really?
With our extraction in place, fine dust around skirtings and edges only. No clouds, no settling on every surface. Clients carry on working from home through most projects. We never use the older non-extracting machines that some companies still rely on.
Do you supply the wood, or do I buy it separately?
Both options work. Most clients prefer us to supply. We get trade pricing from Natural Wood Floor Co, Flooring Sales and the other premium suppliers, and pass a fair portion of that on, which usually beats high-street retail. If you've already bought the wood, we'll happily fit it (with a quick check on the product spec first).
What's the lead time in Balham?
Honestly, further ahead than most people expect, often a few months, because we never rush one floor to start the next. Installations run longer again where wood needs ordering and time to settle. Smaller repair jobs we can sometimes fit in sooner, just ask, and we'll always give you the honest position on the diary before you commit to anything.
Are you on Checkatrade?
Yes, and the reviews are public, both on Checkatrade and on Google. Same name on every job: Howard Naish Wooden Floors Ltd.
Where exactly are you based in Balham?
61b Midmoor Road, SW12, between Balham High Road and Tooting Bec Common. Luke grew up in Balham and the first floor we ever sanded as Howard Naish was a bedroom opposite Hyde Farm, so quote visits in SW12 are easy to arrange, often the same week.
