Why Chipstead Clients Choose Us

The Black Finger Mosaic Floor

The floor on this page is a real Chipstead job, and it started with a problem: the client wanted a black floor with real character and could not find a pre-finished board she liked anywhere. She had looked everywhere. Nothing had the depth or the movement she was after, because a floor like this does not come out of a box. It has to be built.

She originally had herringbone in mind, then asked if we could lay something wilder. We can, but as she priced up the grander weave patterns they were coming out pricey. So we showed her finger mosaic. She was blown away by the complication of the pattern. The wood moves in different directions, so the grain catches the light differently across the room. We primed the subfloor with a liquid DPM, laid the mosaic raw, block by block, then put down patch tests so she could see just how many blacks there are. She found her dream black on her own floor, and we stained and sealed the lot to match.

  • Bespoke parquet laid raw and finished on site: finger mosaic, herringbone, chevron, mansion weave
  • Subfloor primed with a liquid DPM before a single block goes down
  • Any colour, proven with patch tests on your own floor before you commit
  • Honest advice on pattern and price, so the floor you love fits the budget you have
  • Family-run, with 22 years' hands-on experience, same hands on every job

Chipstead is home ground for us, right on the doorstep. The village's big detached houses along the lanes off High Road and Hazelwood Lane, and the homes out towards Kingswood, Walton-on-the-Hill and Woodmansterne, are exactly where bespoke parquet belongs: proper rooms with the space to let a pattern breathe. We already cover Purley, Coulsdon and Sutton on the same run, so CR5 is a regular patch for us, not a trek.

What We Do Here

Our Services in Chipstead

Bespoke Parquet Patterns

Finger mosaic, herringbone, chevron, basket weave and mansion weave, laid block by block over a properly prepared subfloor. Part of the job is helping you land on the right pattern for the room and the budget, as we did with the finger mosaic on this page. See our parquet page.

Staining & Colour

Black, and every black in between. Because we lay floors raw and finish them on site, the colour is genuinely open: patch tests go down on your own floor so you pick from the real thing, not a brochure. Our Chipstead client had no idea how many blacks there were until she saw them side by side. More on our floor staining page.

Subfloor Prep & DPM

A glue-down parquet floor lives or dies by its subfloor. We level what needs levelling and prime with a liquid damp proof membrane before a single block goes down, sealing the floor against the moisture that makes blocks lift and fail years later. Slower, dearer, and worth every penny.

New Floors, Supplied & Fitted

Engineered oak planks, herringbone and solid blocks sourced through our trade suppliers, with samples brought to your door so you choose in your own light. One team supplies, lays, sands and finishes, one quote covers the lot. See our installation and supply page.

Sanding & Restoration

Chipstead's older houses hold plenty of original boards and parquet worth saving. We bring them back with our three-stage sand, repairs in matching timber, and a finish tested on your own floor first. The house stays liveable throughout. Explore our floor sanding page.

Every Quote Includes

  • Free site visit, fixed written quote, no obligation
  • Industrial dust extraction on all machines
  • Full public liability insurance
  • Dust sheets, skirting masking, door seals
  • Daily clean-down: your home stays liveable
  • Aftercare guidance for years of good looks

Straight Answers

Frequently Asked in Chipstead

What is a finger mosaic floor?
Finger mosaic is a parquet pattern built up from small fingers of solid oak laid in alternating blocks, so the grain runs in different directions across the floor. That is what gives it its character: the light catches each block differently as you move through the room, so the floor changes with the time of day. It was everywhere in the mid-century and then almost disappeared, which is exactly why it stands out now. The Chipstead floor on this page is a brand-new finger mosaic, laid block by block and finished on site.
Can you stain a new parquet floor black?
Yes, and it is one of our favourite jobs. Because we lay the floor raw and finish it on site, the colour is genuinely open: our Chipstead client wanted a black floor with real character and could not find a pre-finished board she liked anywhere. We laid patch tests to show her the different blacks, and she was amazed how many there are, from soft charcoal through to deep ebony. She picked her dream black off her own floor, and we stained and sealed the whole floor to match.
What parquet patterns can you lay in Chipstead?
All of them: herringbone, chevron, basket weave, mansion weave and finger mosaic, plus borders and inlays. Part of the job is helping you land on the right one. Our Chipstead client started on herringbone, wanted something wilder, and found the grander weave patterns were coming out pricey. We showed her finger mosaic and she was blown away by the complication of the pattern, all the character she wanted, at a price that made sense. That is the honest advice you get on a free site visit.
Why do you prime the subfloor with a DPM before laying parquet?
Because a glue-down parquet floor is only as good as what is underneath it. A liquid DPM, a damp proof membrane, seals the subfloor against moisture coming up from below, which is what causes blocks to lift, cup or fail years down the line. On the Chipstead job we primed the subfloor with DPM before a single finger went down. It is not the quickest route, but it is the difference between a floor that lasts decades and one that has to be done again.
Do you cover Chipstead and the villages around it regularly?
Yes. Our workshop base is in Balham but Chipstead is home ground for us personally, and we already cover Purley, Coulsdon and Sutton on the same run. The village's big detached houses and the properties out towards Kingswood and Walton-on-the-Hill are exactly the kind of homes bespoke parquet belongs in, and we are happy quoting anywhere across CR5 and the surrounding lanes.
Are you insured and Checkatrade approved?
Yes to both. We carry full public liability insurance, and our reviews are public on Checkatrade and on Google. Same name on every job in Chipstead and across South London and Surrey: Howard Naish Wooden Floors Ltd.
