Why Purley Clients Choose Us

Pattern Floors, Fitted Properly

  • Herringbone and parquet fitting specialists: pattern floors set out from the room's centre line and fitted block by block, with proper borders around bays, hearths and door thresholds
  • The photographs on this page are our own work, from a Purley herringbone floor we brought back after a flood
  • Sanding and restoration experience across Purley's Edwardian and 1930s family homes, from Foxley Lane to the Riddlesdown side
  • LOBA-trained for the full finish range, including the raw, natural just-sanded look that suits pale oak pattern floors
  • Family-run, with over 40 years' hands-on experience between the directors, same hands on every job

The herringbone in these photos has a story. The clients had a flood, and the boards had started to creak and let go, section by section. We lifted the failed areas, re-bonded and glued every loose block, refitted the floor, then sanded and finished the lot so it reads as one perfect surface again. Purley is home ground too: Dean grew up just down the road in Coulsdon, so these are streets he's known all his life.

What We Do Here

Our Services in Purley

Herringbone & Parquet Installation

New oak pattern floors, measured, set out and fitted block by block. The detached and semi-detached houses of CR8 have the generous hallways and reception rooms that herringbone was made for, and it remains the single most requested floor we fit here. Prime or character grade oak, single or double herringbone, with borders where the room deserves them.

Floor Sanding & Restoration

Original pine boards, oak strip and existing parquet brought back with our three-stage sanding process, gap filling, block repairs and refinishing. Plenty of Purley's inter-war homes still have their first floors hiding under carpet, and they usually restore beautifully. Industrial dust extraction on every floor machine, so the house stays liveable.

Engineered Oak Supply & Fit

Where a plank floor suits better, we supply and fit engineered oak sourced through Natural Wood Floor Co, Flooring Sales and Staki: trade suppliers we use ourselves, not off-the-shelf ranges. Samples brought to your door, honest advice on board width and wear layer, and one fixed quote covering the wood and the fitting together.

Raw & Natural Finishes

The pale, untreated look in the photographs on this page is finished, it just doesn't look it. Modern raw-effect lacquers and invisible oils protect the oak while keeping that freshly sanded colour. We test finish options as sample patches on your own floor before the final coats, so nothing is chosen from a brochure.

Hallways, Landings & Stairs

The hallway takes more traffic than any room in the house, and in Purley it's usually the first thing guests see through a stained glass front door. We fit and refinish hallway floors to handle real family life: hard-wearing finishes, neat junctions with stairs and carpets, and thresholds done properly rather than hidden under trim.

From Our Google Reviews

★★★★★

"Luke, Dean and their team did a fantastic job of flooring all 3 levels of our newly-renovated home. They were professional, worked hard and communicated very well with us throughout the process. They also dealt with working around the onsite building team with no fuss or complaint, even though I am sure it was not easy at times. The team's work is excellent and we are thoroughly pleased with our new oak flooring. Highly recommended!"

Frequently Asked in Purley

We're on the Webb Estate, can a new floor suit an arts-and-crafts house?
Very much so. Herringbone and parquet were the floors these houses were built around, so a properly fitted pattern floor looks like it has always been there. We set out the pattern from the centre of the room, work borders around bays and hearths, and match the tone to the joinery rather than fighting it. The photographs on this page are from a recent Purley installation in exactly this style of home.
Can you fit herringbone over concrete as well as floorboards?
Yes, both, and the preparation is different for each. Concrete gets moisture-tested first, then levelled or primed as needed before the blocks are bonded down. Existing floorboards are secured and overlaid with a suitable substrate so the finished pattern sits flat and stays quiet underfoot. Getting the subfloor right is most of the job, and it's the part you never see.
Can the floor stay looking raw and natural like your photos?
Yes. That pale, just-sanded look is one of the most requested finishes right now, and it's achieved with modern raw-effect lacquers and oils that protect the wood while keeping the untreated appearance. We do sample patches on your own boards before the final coats so you can see it in your light before committing.
How much dust should we expect?
Very little. Every floor machine we run is hooked to industrial dust extraction, so what's left is a fine dusting around skirtings and edges rather than clouds through the house. Most clients stay living at home for the whole job.
You're based in Balham, do you really cover Purley?
Yes, CR8 is comfortably inside our patch and we've worked in Purley recently. We cover South London and its borders as one area, so lead times are the same as anywhere else we work: honestly, often a few months, because we never rush one floor to start the next, with installations adding time where a new floor needs ordering. We'll give you the honest position on the diary when you enquire.
Are you on Checkatrade?
Yes, and the reviews are public, both on Checkatrade and on Google. Same name on every job: Howard Naish Wooden Floors Ltd.
