We were in Battersea to fit a brand-new floor in the bedroom and sand the existing kitchen floor. Nice summer morning, coffee in the garden before we started, and the client came out for a chat. We were standing on her decking. She looked down at it and said, "It's a shame we can do nothing with this."

That is not true, we told her. The sanding machines were already on site, so while we were doing the rooms we could do the decking too, at a price that made sense. She didn't believe it would come up: it had been down for years, weathered and damaged, and she was sure it wouldn't look great. You'll be very surprised, we said. Her answer was fair enough: it couldn't look worse than it did. Then the machines went over it, and the grey years came off to fresh, clean timber.
