Original parquet in Clapham, the speciality jobs
Some of the most rewarding work we do in Clapham is restoring original parquet that's been hidden under carpet for decades. The Edwardian and inter-war villas around the Common often have beautiful oak or pitch pine herringbone underneath, sometimes lifted in places, blocks missing where radiator pipes were run, but fundamentally still there. We can lift damaged sections, source matching reclaimed blocks, re-lay, sand the whole floor flat, and finish to look like the day it was first installed (usually better, the wood has aged beautifully in the meantime).
Parquet sanding is genuinely skilled work. Get the angles wrong and you can sand through the wear layer of original blocks that aren't replaceable. We use edgers and orbital sanders for the detail work and only the right grit progression for the main field. Most companies rush this and you can see it in the finish.
The Clapham parquet a builder nearly ruined
One Clapham job we'll never forget started with a phone call from a client who'd already had the work "done". She'd let her builder take on the parquet while he was doing other bits in the house. He'd hired a belt sander and an edger, and that was the extent of the kit. A parquet floor should never be finished with just a belt sander: the blocks run in different directions, so a belt-only sand leaves tram lines and chatter bumps right across the pattern, and hers had them everywhere. The finish was worse. The lacquer had been dragged across the herringbone in the wrong direction, with dry lines, overlap marks and thick patches where it had been left to pool.
We resanded the whole floor from scratch to get it genuinely flat, working with the pattern rather than across it. The builder had also left a number of blocks loose, and this is where parquet gets interesting: the blocks were tongue and groove, so the moment we started lifting one, it disturbed its neighbours. Rather than pull the pattern apart, we used a syringe technique: drill a small hole into each loose block, inject adhesive underneath it section by section, and let it grab. The holes disappeared afterwards during the full resin fill we ran across the floor to close its gaps and voids.
The client was over the moon, and honestly so were we. But the lesson is why we tell the story: there's a real difference between a professional sanding company and a general builder who says he can sand. The hire shop will rent anyone the machines. It's the years of floors behind you that tell you what to do when the blocks start lifting.
